Umag is a town on the north-western coast of the Istrian peninsula. First it was built on an island and according to some stories it got its name by a Celtic word „mag” meaning fertile. Because of its idyllic position it became home for Roman noblemen that built their villas there and remains of some are visible even today. During the years Umag kept its image of rich summer resort so you can still see the glory and charm of venetian houses in the old town core, but also the renaissance and baroque churches out of which we recommend you see the Town walls with city gate and mobile bridge built 100 years ago, the bishops residence, Church of our Blessed Virgin Mary with an organ from the 18th century, an early Christian sarcophagus, a stuck cannon ball of the Genoa army and many other landmarks. Today, Umag is a very popular tourist destination – see video:
Some call Umag the town of sports because for more than 20 years the ATP tennis tournament has been taking place – more on the tournament see here . Accommodation you can find in quality objects whether talking about villas, small family or luxury hotels, apartments and camps. The town was also recognized in the year 2011 by the National Geographic that enlisted Istria in the top 10 world destinations with more than 40 blue flag beaches and the article was complimented with a photograph of one of the beaches in Umag. Not far from Umag, in the Savudrija bay in the year 1818 a lighthouse was built and today it is the oldest one on the Adriatic and most northern one in Croatia. There is a sad love story connected to the lighthouse of the love of Austrian count Metternich and a Croatian woman for which the lighthouse was built. She died without ever seeing the lighthouse, and the count never visited the place again. One more thing that may make Umag attractive to visitors is that while strolling around town you will ran into small squirrels for which the population founded and ecological project “Squirrel Parks” that became an excursioning point to many visitors. Considering the diverse offer and contents we recommend Umag to all guests. Because of the beautiful beaches it is ideal for families with children, the sport and recreational offer makes it an excellent choice for active vacations and hotels with rich wellness and spa offer make it attractive for those who want to relax. The whole area of Istria is well known for good gastronomic offer so in numerous restaurants you will have an opportunity to taste the Istrian olive oil, Istrian wines, truffle delicacies and boskarin (Istrian ox) dishes as well as others. We therefore recommend you visit the tavern Sole , cantina Melon , tavern Nono , San Rocco and many others.
